BARRETO - THE SECRET OF MARINER'S SUCCESS

Jose Ramirez Barreto. Undoubtedly he’s the best foreign footballer coming to India of his age. He started his dream journey on Indian soil donning the green-and maroon colours of our Mohun Bagan, about 10 yrs back against ITI at Bangalore in the 99-00 National League. He scored his first goal in India against Dempo in that tourney. Since then he never needed to look behind. He carries on firing his scoring guns as before. He is still the savior of our side and the terror to the oppositions. He seems to be an endless wonder. In course of time, he has really turned out to be the biggest heartthrob of all Mariners and an indispensable part of our family. So he is often fondly called as ‘Jishu da”. In his early days, he used to play a bit withdrawal role behind the terrific striking duo of Stephen and Igor. Slowly, but surely, he proved himself equally fit for the positive position. He made a note of his excellence playing as a solo striker, as well as, combining with a cluster of faces in the likes of Seriki, Santos, Yakubu, Bhaichung, Lalam, and presently Chidi. In between, just for tenure of 1½ yrs, owing to some untoward circumstances, he had to de-link relations with Mohun Bagan. But again it was all OK. He returned to his own home and continued to glorify our club. He has had been a perfectly blended epitome of leadership, dedication, determination, skill and professionalism. He had scored which scored many wonderful and memorable goals which not only us pleasure and a cause to exult, but also several titles to our club. He is truly an allowed performer which is reflected from his great goals of all sorts possible in the game of soccer- side volley, back-volley, delicate placements, cracking strikes, flying head, back head flecks, or so. It seems that Jose comes to his own when he dons our jersey. Steadily, he has achieved the envious landmark of scoring 200 goals for our club, on 21.12.09, when his brilliant back-header deceived Mohammedan custodian Naseem Akhtar in the 09-10 Federation Cup opener at Guwahati. And to achieve this feat, he had to overcome all odds- rough tackles, robust blocking, heavy pushing of opponent defenders, and also bullshit decisions of the match officials at times. But he’s Barreto- the coolest customer on pitch forever, who always eyes on on his goal of hailing our club. And this blessed character always keeps him scoring goals till date and away of any dispute or spoiled politics, and he’s respected by all- colleagues and opponents, critics and concerned personnel of Indian football arena. Congratulations Jishu da once again . You carry on your run like this and bring more glory for our beloved club. And we feel proud to witness his feats. Reported by : Shubhagata Chandra
